Mamaroneck school calendar for 2026-27: Days off and ideas for parents

Mamaroneck schools are closed on 30 weekdays this year outside of summer, and the calendar has a few quirks that catch even families who've been here a decade. Election Day is a day off here while New York City kids learn remotely. Spring break comes in two pieces. And two days in March and May won't be settled until we know how many snow days the winter uses.

We're Sheridan Fencing Academy, and our Westchester club is at One Depot Plaza, directly across the street from the Mamaroneck Metro-North station. Below is every Mamaroneck Union Free School District day off for 2026-27, taken from the district's official calendar, and the programs within about 20 minutes that actually run on those days. No sponsorships—just the programs we'd point a friend toward.

Two more days sit on the calendar as snow-day givebacks. Monday, March 29, and Friday, May 28, become days off only if the district doesn't use its snow days, and the second one would turn Memorial Day into a four-day weekend. Don't book a nonrefundable camp for either until the district confirms in the spring.

Elementary students also have 11 a.m. dismissals on November 18 and 19 and April 14 and 15 for parent-teacher conferences.

If your kids are at Rye Neck, the calendar is nearly identical, with one difference that matters. Rye Neck's December break starts on December 24, with an early dismissal on December 23, per the Rye Neck 2026-27 calendar.

Single days off in the fall (October 12, November 3, and November 11)

The fall days off are one at a time and spread across three different weekdays. Election Day is the one to circle, because it's a Mamaroneck closure that New York City-based camps don't plan for.

New Rochelle YMCA Holiday Camp. The most complete coverage of the Mamaroneck calendar we found, at 50 Weyman Avenue in New Rochelle, about 12 minutes by car. Camp runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for ages 5 to 12, with an 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. extended option, and swimming is part of the day. Days cost $75 for members and $100 for non-members, and the 2026-27 schedule includes October 12, November 3, and November 11. Register by phone at 914-632-1818 or see the YMCA's holiday camp page.

Pelham Art Center. School's Out camps at 155 Fifth Avenue in Pelham, about 15 minutes away and a short walk from the Pelham Metro-North station. The Veterans Day lineup includes clay handbuilding, a Monster Maker Lab, and a Creative Play Camp, all running 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last season's day rate was $110 for non-members, so confirm current pricing at pelhamartcenter.org.

Nature Center at Greenburgh. A Columbus Day Day Camp for kindergarten through third grade on October 12, at 99 Dromore Road in Scarsdale, about 20 minutes away. It runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at $150 for non-members and $120 for members. It's the pick for the kid who'd rather spend a fall Monday outside with animals. Details at naturecentergb.org.

The Rock Club. Camp TRC at 130 Rhodes Street in New Rochelle turns a day off into a day on the climbing walls, for ages 6 to 13. It runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at $150 a day, and the gym runs it year-round for school days off. Call 914-633-7625 to confirm your specific date, or see the camp page.

Sheridan Fencing Academy. This is us. Our philosophy is that good training is fun training, and a day off is the best possible time to prove it. The club is across the street from the Mamaroneck train station, with street parking and a municipal lot nearby, eight full-length strips, and a parent waiting area. A camp day mixes real fencing with games and movement, all the equipment is here waiting, and nobody needs any experience to start. If your kid likes it, our after-school classes run all year. You can book a free trial class or look at all our fencing programs and schedules.

Why we like it: Bias acknowledged. Every kid who walks in on a day off starts from zero, because almost nobody fences at recess. That makes it an unusually easy room to join for a single day.

Hommocks Park Ice Rink. The town rink at 140 Hommocks Road, five minutes from the village, opens for the season in October and runs public skating sessions, including on some holidays. No membership is needed, and rental skates start at toddler sizes. Check the town's public session schedule for the day you need, or call 914-834-1069.

Thanksgiving (November 26 to 27)

Thanksgiving is the thinnest stretch on the calendar. We didn't find a camp in the area running either day, and the noon dismissal on Wednesday, November 25, adds a half day to cover on top of the holiday.

This is the week for free and outdoor options.

• Marshlands Conservancy at 220 Boston Post Road in Rye has trails open from sunrise to sunset, about ten minutes away

• The Rye Nature Center grounds at 873 Boston Post Road are open daily from dawn to dusk

Holiday recess (December 23 to January 1)

Holiday recess starts a day earlier in Mamaroneck than in New York City or Rye Neck, which leaves December 23 almost uncovered. December 31 and January 1 are thin too. Plan the middle of the break around a camp and the edges around family.

New Rochelle YMCA runs December 28 to 30 at the same day rates, or $380 for members and $415 for non-members by the week.

The Rock Club's Rock 'N Racquet camp, for ages 7 to 12, runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from December 28 to 30. It's sold by the week at $945, and its break weeks line up exactly with the Mamaroneck calendar.

Random Farms Kids' Theater is the one worth the drive, at 1 Zeiss Drive in Thornwood, 25 to 30 minutes away. Its winter Vacation Workshops run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for kindergarten through eighth grade, with a two-day session on December 26 and 27 for $250 and a four-day session from December 28 to 31 for $450. It's one of the only programs we found running on December 31. Registration opens October 1 at randomfarmsny.org.

MLK Day (January 18)

MLK Day is a federal holiday, so the libraries close, but the YMCA doesn't. New Rochelle YMCA runs a full camp day on January 18. Hommocks Park Ice Rink is the local fallback for an afternoon on the ice, and last season it ran a long public session on Presidents' Day, so check the schedule for MLK Day too.

Winter recess (February 15 to 19)

The February break is the one week Mamaroneck, Rye Neck, and New York City all share, and it's the week with the most camp options. Book this one first.

• New Rochelle YMCA runs the full week

• The Rock Club's Rock 'N Racquet runs February 15 to 19

• Nature Center at Greenburgh runs a Winter Break Camp for kindergarten through third grade from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at $625 for non-members and $550 for members. Its spring camp sold out last year, so don't wait on this one either.

Larchmont Public Library at 121 Larchmont Avenue fills the week with free programs. Last February's lineup included Lego Free Play, Gym on Wheels for toddlers, and a life-size Candyland for kindergarten through third grade. It's closed on Presidents' Day itself, so plan for the other four days. See larchmontlibrary.org.

SPORTIME Harbor Island, in Harbor Island Park five minutes from the village, advertises a School Break Camp for junior tennis players with limited spots. Dates and prices aren't posted, so call 914-468-4470.

March 10 and spring recess (March 22 to 26 and April 22 to 23)

March 10 is the trickiest single day of the year. It's a Superintendent's Conference Day that also falls on Eid al-Fitr, but New York City closes for Eid on March 9. Camps that follow the city calendar, including the New Rochelle YMCA, run on the 9th instead of the 10th. Line up a family plan early.

Spring recess comes in two parts.

• March 22 to 26 is a Mamaroneck and Rye Neck break that New York City doesn't share. New Rochelle YMCA and The Rock Club's Rock 'N Racquet both run it.

• April 22 to 23 covers Passover. The New Rochelle YMCA runs both days.

Memorial Day and Juneteenth (May 31 and June 18)

The last two days off of the year are both long-weekend days, and most camps don't run them. Plan for family time, Marshlands, or an afternoon at the Rye Nature Center. If March 29 or May 28 becomes a giveback day, the same outdoor options apply.

The Mamaroneck calendar rewards families who read it closely. Election Day, March 10, the split spring break, and the snow giveback days are the four places where Mamaroneck parts ways with New York City and with the camps that plan around it. Those are the days families end up scrambling.
